Arnold.jpg (9671 bytes)

Kenneth Arnold, the man who made the first major flying saucer sighting in 1947, and which led to the coining of the term "flying saucer" meets with   Dwight Eisenhower. The occasion was Arnold's winning of the Republican nomination for Lieutenant governor of Idaho in 1962.

On June 30, 1947 Arnold saw a formation of 9 bright objects moving roughly south from Mount Baker towards Mount Ranier. At first Arnold assumed they were jets, but he could see no tails. When they passed over Ranier's peak, he began to calculate their speed at 1,700 mph.
