Question: Is Townsend Brown still working on his flying saucers? (Back)

Thomas Townsend Brown passed away in 1985, and Townsend Brown died in October of 1985 due to complications arising from breathing in too much ozone - a by-product of his high voltage research. He only had one lung at the time of his death. Years earlier, one lung was removed due to an infection caught while swimming (which he thoroughly enjoyed). His wife, Josephine Brown, passed away in 1990. It is not known if his work is being carried on by outside companies, as his work during the latter part of his life was kept "under wraps."

The Browns spent many years living on Catalina Island, off the southern California coast, where Townsend Brown chose to be buried at the small, local cemetery in Avalon. Mrs. Brown passed away on the California mainland. Due to the often controversial nature of Townsend Brown's work and other interests, the remaining members of the Brown family have elected to keep a low public profile.

Question: What happened to Townsend Brown's equipment and scientific prototypes? (Back)

A small number of models have been retained by the Townsend Brown family. These models have been retained for their sentimental value rather than any scientific usefulness. Other individuals have collected, through the years, prototypes of models which have been stored. To our knowledge these units have not been used to further his research.

Question: What happened to Townsend Brown's laboratory notes, journals and data? (Back)

A number of journals have been retained by the Townsend Brown family for historical purposes, and those have not been made available to the general public. Question: When did Townsend Brown begin his Naval career? (Back)

Townsend Brown (2830363 AS US NAVY) enlisted into the Navy on September 3, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio. During his 9 weeks of training, at the Great Lakes Training Center, he achieved the status of honor man for Company 7 (consisting of 103 men). During his training, he qualified for radio school.

Question: Was Townsend Brown involved in the so-called "Philadelphia Experiment"? (Back)

During his lifetime, Townsend Brown neither admitted nor denied involvement in the "Philadelphia Experiment." During his career with the Navy, he was engaged in several projects concerning electromagnetic fields, including electromagnetic mine-sweeping and ship degaussing. Many researchers feel that if the "Philadelphia Experiment" had occurred, Brown's expertise would have been utilized.

At one point in his later life, Brown was asked to edit a paper sumbitted to him by William Moore (co-author of "The Philadelphia Experiment"). The paper was a rough draft of a proposed article on Mr. Brown's life. Mr. Moore had planted a paragraph describing a series of experiments, sponsored by the Navy, which were based on the effects and equipment later associated with the "Philadelphia Experiment." He had done this intentionally to observe Brown's reaction in the editing process. Although Brown made other corrections and notes, he allowed the entire test paragraph to remain intact.

Question: Why did Townsend Brown create NICAP (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomenon), and what was his involvement in it? (Back)

Townsend Brown founded NICAP in 1956, and served for some time as director, a post which was later assumed by Major Donald Keyhoe. The purpose of NICAP was to serve as a clearinghouse and "listening post" for information regarding UFO sightings and evidence. His intentions were two-fold; to further his own research in electrokinetic apparatus (airfoils), and to create a networking system for compiling and dispersing information to the world about the UFO phenomenon.

Question: Is Rand International, Inc. still active? If so what purpose did brown have in founding that company? (Back)

Townsend Brown founded Rand International, Inc. soon after his work with the 10 million volt flame-jet generator in Meadesville, Florida. Brown founded the corporation in Nassua, Bahamas as a device to pursue foreign patent applications. Rand International, Inc. has not been in operation for many years.

Question: Why did Townsend Brown shift his research interests from electrokinetic apparatuses to electrical self-potential in rocks during his latter years? (Back)

Townsend Brown never really moved completely away from his earlier research in electrokinetic apparati. While researching the forces produced by his apparati Brown noticed certain sidereal variations in the forces produced. He eventually theorized that these fluctuations were caused by variations within the gravitational field.

After further research, he came to the conclusion that these gravitational variations were causing a change in the electrical potential of the sensors. He believed that the gravitational field was interacting constructively and destructively with the output of the sensors, resulting in cycles of self-potential output. It was on these cycles which he focused his attention during the latter part of his life. He was working on this part of his research up until the night of death in 1985.

Townsend Brown felt as early as the 1950's that an alien presence was highly likely. To collect additional information on the UFO phenomenon, he founded NICAP.

Question: What was Townsend Brown's philosophy of mankind's interaction with UFO's? (Back)

Townsend Brown felt, on one hand, that UFO's must have a physical embodiment to some degree, as he felt he was able to duplicate in his laboratory and theory some of the propulsion effects normally associated with some UFO reports. On the other hand, he believed that the UFO phenomenon was extremely complicated and went beyond most human conceptions. In a story he once told to his family, he made an analogy between a fish looking up at the bottom of a passing ship. "That fish looks up at that strange thing in his sky. It may have different properties, maybe size, prop wash or turbulence. Some fish will scatter and never look again, some fish will wonder, but none of them will really know what that form represents. They will never know about what other things man is capable of other than sailing across that particular part of the ocean. We in many ways are those fish, and the lights we see in our skies are the hulls of those ships."
